Apple iPad 2 in Production: Thinner, Lighter, with Front-facing Camera, Report Says

Apple's next-generation iPad is in production by foreign manufacturers, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal.

The new iPad -- which has been nicknamed the iPad 2 unofficially for months -- is thinner and lighter and features a front-facing camera designed to take advantage of Apple's FaceTime video chat standard, the Journal said, citing unnamed sources "familiar with the matter."

The iPad 2 will also include a faster processor, a more powerful graphics processor and more memory, the report said. The new iPad will not, however, feature a very high-resolution jump, and its 9.7-inch display will be similar to that of the first-generation iPad, the Journal said.

Both AT&T and Verizon Wireless will carry the new iPad, but Sprint and T-Mobile will not, the report said.
Apple officials were unavailable for comment on the report Tuesday afternoon.

The Cupertino company has sold more than 14 million iPads since the tablet computer hit store shelves last April, with about 7.33 million units sold last quarter.
